Bodies: The Exhibition

Yesterday my girlfriend and I, while quite unexpectedly, ended up making the effort to see "Bodies: The Exhibition" at the Ala Moana center. While we both had heard and read about it, neither of us had a clue as to where exactly it was taking place. And by sheer dumb luck, we just happened to come across the exhibit while exiting out of Nordstrom.

Visually it is unlike anything I've ever seen before and just knowing what we were seeing was once actual people, it just made the experience that much more meaningful. I mean it has everything from organs, to bones and skeletons, down to the nerves and even fetuses.

I was definitely amazed as to how much effort our bodies put out so that we can do what we do. I mean even the most simplest of tasks can amount to a mountain of work for our bodies. Needless to say, I came out of that exhibit with a new found respect for the human body.

A couple of interesting facts that still stick out in my mind are:

- I didn't know if all of our muscles in our body worked together, it could be possible for us to move 10 tons.

- It will someday be possible for medical treatment to be tailored to our specific genetics.

- A baby has 270 bones, while an adult has just 206.

All in all, I'd say the visit was worth it and the information, along with the visuals, certainly help paint a vivid picture as to how our bodies function and also the amount of work it takes to ensure that we can continue to do so for our lifespan.

Obviously, it was certainly an eye opener for me and definitely a rare (and visual) learning opportunity that I doubt I would have had the chance to experience otherwise. What a way to kick off my little vacation...

Inspirational

Feeling slightly bored, I did what I tend to do when I can't think of anything better to do: Browse through other people's blogs. And, as always, I find a few that catch my eye and I bookmark for future browsing.

Which reminds me, I think I'll add a few of those into the loop and take out some of the less active blogs from my "Blogs of Interest." It is also days like these that make me wish I knew other languages, because there are a great deal of interesting blogs out there that I just can't read.

One thing I am wanting to do and have wanted to since seeing others doing these, is make a photo blog. It doesn't matter to me if I end up being the only one seeing it, I'd just like to share stuff that I find interesting. Even if it ends up being a little strange, such as no parking signs...

Anyway, the top of the list would be to make that photo blog. But I think when the day arrives where I can actually take a picture with a camera that isn't attached to a cell phone, that is when the idea will be brought to life and not a moment sooner.

At the top of this entry is one of those cell phone pictures, one of the better ones to be honest. Otherwise, there have been a great deal of looking like an idiot pointing my phone at trees/objects/animals/etc.

Random & Useless fact: This is my 200th post! Not that am I keeping track of such things, mind you (Blogger does though!). It sure took me a long time to get to this number...

Speaking of photos, when the day comes where I own a digital camera, one place I'd love to get pictures of is atop Diamond Head. The view up on top is absolutely beautiful! The only thing that stands in the way is simply making the trip back to the top. For the most part, the hike up isn't anything really bad. But then there are those few long and steep flights of stairs when you get nearer to the top... oh man...

Anyway, today is my last day of work for a week and I imagine it'll be hell just trying to get through the day. But then I've had some bad days before and considering I am still here, tomorrow should be a walk in the park.

Refresh

With me starting this new job soon, my intent is to try and keep both my new and current jobs at the same time. But, for obvious reasons, I am going to cut back the amount of hours I work at my present employer. However, in doing so I found out I would end up losing my several vacation days in the process.

It would be a total lost on my part, I mean they don't pay out for the days or anything. That shiz would just be gone! And that ain't cool, but that is one of the many ways they take great care of us, "their people."

So this coming week, I will not have to lift a box or check in deliveries or have people try to bitch me out because the 1.4oz package of kiri konbu isn't in stock for whatever wide range of reasons we tend to give.

But still I get questioned and huffed and puffed at by "adults" of all ages, for whatever it is that they are looking for. These days, even if I know a product is not in stock, I'll go and look for it anyway. It seems that is the easiest way not to get hit by a wall of complaints. What I wish some people would understand that we aren't your typical grocery store. The bulk of our stock comes from Japan and if the F.D.A. stops it, that will either hold it up for at least a week or, should they deem it a hazard or whatever, it's game over.

And from what I understand, the F.D.A. can be a little random on their holds.

Yet even after I assure said customer that the product should be in at (insert a time of week here) with the promise of a rain check of the item in question, I still get that scoff and an occasional comment said only to the wind ("We should go to Daiei!)...

I wonder if people realize that Daiei is long gone? Maybe I should suggest Holiday Mart as a worthy alternative....

But really, I don't get too mad or frustrated over this stuff as it might seem. It is a grocery store and we do draw a lot of old, old Japanese people (among many others too) to the place. Gotta expect the worst, in my opinion. And you've gotta have thick skin or else a lot of this shit would end up getting to you. Especially when you get asked about the same product, all day long.

Wow and then I was sidetracked to no end, which certainly derailed my whole original train of thought. Anyway, yes I am looking forward to having the week off and resting up my sore back (Rice will be the death of me) and a pair of sore knees. I guess walking back and forth, back and forth, back and forth for at least 8-9 hours a day, five days a week will do that to you. Then again, my shoes have been through hell so that could explain something as well.

In any event, maybe I'll get back into the groove of writing while I am at home in the coming week. Maybe I'll even finish a game or two that I've been meaning to play (Final Fantasy IV, Crisis Core, Lost Odyssey, Oblivion, Super Smash Bros. Brawl...). Or maybe I'll just prank call my workplace for a while...

Or maybe I'll just get the hell out of the house and keep my brain busy somehow. Yes, yes... that does sound promising. I'd sit around, but I don't want to get -too- lazy. August is going to be a busy month, no doubt about that.

Then Dragon Gate wrestling is coming in September! Which reminds me, I wonder if I'll still get to go...

Isn't this just random?

All Sorts of Thoughts

I haven't been too on the ball this month, in terms of actually posting and what not. It just cannot be helped at this point, I mean I feel as though I wrapped up in just too many different things right now and my brain is a scattered mess!

Which is what this post will resemble, a host of random thoughts that have just been waiting to burst out into the world. I hope I don't lose any brain cells in the process, I don't think I really have that many left to spare to be quite honest.

So things at work didn't turn out as bad as I was expecting (my boss took the news of my new job a lot better then I thought he would) and so now everything is pretty much on track now. Now I just need to deal with the new job jitters...

And holy shit folks! Final Fantasy XIII is coming to XBox 360!? Is that even possible? Maybe now I won't need to pick up that PS3 like I thought I might.

Speaking of Final Fantasy, FFIV is impressive in my book. I have to give it credit, I mean it is a RPG on the DS WITH voice acting! That isn't anything to sneeze at, not when it is a game for something that isn't a PSP. What I like even more is the feeling of how the story (and characters) has been given a real chance to flesh itself out. And you know me, I love a good story... (bonus points for being a better story & for being FFIV).

What stunned me even more so was the revelation of Chrono Trigger coming to the DS as well. Those fine, fine folks at GameStop almost had me reserving it too, if it weren't for the gay guy and his little attitude, head shaking bit.

Now don't take that last statement the wrong way now, I by no means have any resentment or any negative feelings or opinions about them. But don't try to sell me something while shaking your head around like that! And he didn't even add in the finger snaps at the end either! But all jokes aside, it did bother me and so the reservation was a no go. If you want me to buy something, the bottom line is you'd better tell me straight or else I ain't buying a damn thing.

Jumping games, I like Civilization Revolution. I really do. But what I don't like is how the game comes to an end not long after you reach 2000 A.D. There have been many a times when I (along with a few other civilizations) were built up like a mutha and was about to unleash hell on earth. And then it announces you've got 5 turns left.

Two words: Heart. Breaking.

One last quick thought before I get the fudge out of this place. Victoria. I now have her pictured above in my profile, as a means to show support for her this year, as I believe she has a strong chance at becoming WWE Smackdown's next Divas Champion.

I like Michelle McCool and all and I'm sure she will make a great champ over on the "Blue Brand." But I have to go with the "Psycho Bitch" any day. She can take that title away at a moment's notice and I'd love to see her go one on one with Beth Phoenix too. She (Victoria) did break Phoenix's jaw a year or so ago I believe and that could be a heck of a foundation for a cross-brand war.

But that is just a thought... ^^

The Dark Knight

So tonight was the night when my girlfriend and I went out and saw The Dark Knight. We enjoyed the hell out of the first movie (Batman Begins) and so expectations were high, to say the least.

And when the end credits began to roll, man. To say that I enjoyed it, to say that it was worth it, just wouldn't do this one justice. This is the first movie that has ever actually had me on the edge of my seat.

It is dark and it is nothing less then a roller coaster ride from start to finish. I won't ruin anything by explaining, but you can literally watch things go from good, to bad, to worse.

The cast was absolutely incredible here and I don't just mean Heath Ledger either. Everyone fit their roles and nothing really felt out of place. The touches I liked here like how Batman struggled to find a balance in his personal life and also in his alter ego as well.

Speaking of Heath Ledger though, as I told my girlfriend, there were many a times during the movie where I totally forgot that it was Ledger I was watching. When I watched him on the screen I didn't see him. I saw the Joker. Believe me when I say that he does play a very good (and incredibly crazy) Joker.

I guess I could just go on and on forever, but that is just plain boring huh? I will end this by simply saying this: If you watched and enjoyed Batman Begins, you must see The Dark Knight. Then again, if you watched and enjoyed that, you'd be like us and will end up seeing it regardless. ]

Still...

I don't care what others have to say about this movie, I enjoyed the hell out of it and I would definitely consider seeing it a second time. If I rated movies, this would easily get 5/5. Easily.

Top 25 & Random Thinkings

So besides hitting the theaters (which I think I might do tomorrow, with the new Hellboy movie out), we've been renting movies here and there as well. What pleases me so much about it is we've been getting a pretty good run of movies, nothing which I can say much of anything bad about. The last "bad" movie I think I saw that we've rented was Dragon Wars. That was one... different...

A complete opposite of this would be Spiderwick Chronicles, which I didn't expect to like (but did). But each time I see one of these fantasy type movies, it makes me wonder: How could Eragon have ended so, so bad?

Anyway, I think the top 2 movies that I'd have to give a nod of recommendation to is "The Bucket List" and "Be Kind Rewind." Both of those movies have some good stories behind of them and the actors involved absolutely fit their roles perfectly. Those two movies join the list of recent favorites, along the likes of "Iron Man", "P.S. I Love You" (this one actually made my girlfriend cry from basically the start until the end and that says something) and even Wall-E.

One movie I won't recommend is "Semi-Pro," just because of the fact that it is yet another typical Will Ferrel movie. That isn't to say that it is a bad movie, I mean it does have it's funny moments here and there. But really, at this point my feelings about his movies are, as the saying goes, "once you've seen one, you've seen 'em all."

Now that I think about it, maybe I'll make a list right here and now. Maybe a top 10? Nah, that gets done too often. Besides, I think there are more then 10 movies which I'd rank up there as actual favorites anyway. Hmmm... maybe a top 25 then? Yeah, that'll work I think.

So here goes my top 25 favorite movies, off the top of my head, in no particular order of course. I must be getting lazier, to resort to having to make a list just to make it appear as though I've put in some sort of effort in writing this.

Then again, it did take some mental strain to recall these 25 favorites so...

1. Batman Begins
2. P.S. I Love You
3. 3:10 to Yuma
4. The Bucket List
5. Howl's Moving Castle
6. Wall-E
7. Secondhand Lion
8. Spirited Away
9. The Incredibles
10. The Last Samurai
11. The Matrix
12. Jet Li's Fearless
13. Shoot 'em Up
14. Disney's Aladdin
15. Transformers
16. Iron Man
17. Juno
18. Wild Hogs
19. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
20. Casino Royale
21. Batman
22. Click
23. Harry Potter (can't decide which I liked better)
24. Stardust
25. Nacho Libre

And so there you have it, another post come and gone and another day ends. Besides that, now that we've gotten a Wii Fit, I've got work to do in order to lose that pesky 5 pounds in 2 weeks. While I didn't hit the top of the BMI scale (I did get ranked as "Overweight"), I am a tiny bit over the weight I should be at. No surprise there for me, I mean it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand and know that part right?

Anyway, now I'm just procrastinating like a son of a bitch when I should be doing something besides just sitting here. Yup, I'm up and going!

Not.

Yet.

Going.

Going...

Ok, I'm gone...

I'm fat! *cries*

Bad thought, but my co-worker and I thought it would be extremely bad (and sadistically funny) if the Wii Fit employed an actual voice. Not a soothing, motivational one either. I mean this sucker will call you fat, laugh as you run and just done right be an asshole.

Yes, as I said, it is extremely bad thought and I'm sure that would get Nintendo (or anyone else that tries) sued from here to the moon and back again. And yes, we must have had a lot of free time. Wait, no. Actually, that was the product of working for over 10 hours in a single day.

Did I ever mention I hate Monday nights?

Much Needed Distractions

While this new job of mine is still a few weeks away (at best), my brain has already begun to switch gears. Just going back to work, I mean after getting the call and then having the 3 days off to stew on it, everything just felt different.

It all felt so foreign to me, as if I suddenly became an outsider looking in. And I haven't left yet or anything, which makes things a little awkward at times.

But the deal is done for certain and everything is now geared to move forward. My present employer (or I should say my boss and our store manager) did try to sway my choice. Sure, when I find a new job that is when you start dropping words about this and that.

My hope is that these guys aren't just thinking I'm throwing out a bluff in hopes of getting more money. If that is what is cruising through their minds at this point, then they are going to be sorely disappointed at the outcome.

Anyway! Enough about all that for today, distractions is the name of the game today and boy have I gotten my share of it. Last Friday was a heck of a day because my girlfriend and I decided to hit the movies. Two movies to be exact.

So we made our first stop at Dole Cannery, where the choices were laid out before us. Admittedly, the field of choices wasn't all that wide, but there were enough there to make us both go "hmmm." So then it came down to the moment of truth. What to watch? The Incredible Hulk? Get Smart? Wall-E?

After a lot of back and forth, we decided to see Hancock, starring Will Smith. Neither of us remembered that the movie was released, so it became the wild card no one saw coming. And so that is the one we went for.

Overall, short bursts of thought here. It was a pretty good movie and I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of story involved. I mean it starts out and it does have it's funny moments then and throughout. But towards the ending, things turn around and become serious and it held my attention from start to finish. I easily enjoyed this Will Smith movie a lot more then I did I-Robot and I Am Legend.

So after that gets through, a very smart idea clicked in both of our heads apparently. Since we've seen one movie and since we've got the rest of the day ahead of us, why not see another movie? But we agreed that a change of scenery was needed and so we made the bus trip to Ward.

Oh lovely, lovely Ward. Reminds me of work. Gives me a headache only on days that end with "y."

I'm kidding.

Sort of.

Anyway, so the second movie of choice ended up being Wall-E. Now with the flood of CG animated cartoons these days, it isn't that easy to find one that is actually good. Wall-E, for example, was absolutely great! It is a funny and cute movie, though beneath that there is a good moral to the story as well.

All this kind of makes me laugh because the movie that I wanted to see was Get Smart, which obviously didn't make the cut on two separate counts. Oh well, maybe next weekend my luck will be more on my side.

Last little note:
At long last, Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution is coming out tomorrow! I had hoped to get a copy of it today, but no one was jumping to gun on releasing it early. Oh well. At least now I'll finally get a real chance to build my Roman Empire, where I will rule all the world with an iron fist!

That and I'll also get the chance to prove my girlfriend wrong, in that I am not an overzealous "ruler" who just look big, but will end up biting off way more then I can chew. I don't know where she gets these ideas from...?

Besides, that Romance of the Three Kingdoms game was a fluke. Anyway, I didn't realize that all of my opposition was wiped out and that by sending a small force across the river to take a port town, I had just jabbed the "hornet's nest." Needless to say, the lesson taught in that little incident was learned and fast!

Life Certainly Does Change

I've been saying off and on around here that I was/might/probably would be looking for a new job. But that just didn't happen for the longest of time, simply because I procrastinate as if I were trying to contend for the title of World Champion of Procrastination or something.

And so that is how the story went, up until a week or so ago when I was called in for an interview. It blew my mind, but then it didn't. I mean I was getting in due part because of one of the guys I used to work with, is working with this company now. He put in the good word for me, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Anyway, so fast forward to today and my girlfriend and I get home to find a message on our answering machine. Lo and behold, it was the H.R. person.

This is all good and what not, but as I feared this does put me in a slight bind. Actually, I think it is more about how I am putting myself into this bind rather then the other way around. You see, my current employer is slowly, yet surely going downhill. They can't find good workers and they've been having a bitch of a time in trying to replace their managers (who've been going down, slowly, one by one).

Now I don't want to look like a deserter, a guy who bailed out when the going looked bad. Stupid me tries to be loyal in a world where I know (in the back of my mind) is a courtesy that is oft not returned. Especially not at a 9-5 job.

Ok, alright... to cut a long and boring writing to a minimum, my biggest problem as of right now is if I should stay with my present employer AND try and work this new job together? Or should I say sayonara and focus solely on one job?

What bums me out all the more is the fact that I know with my leaving of my current employer, is I'd be forever on the shit list of my boss. Evidently, the guy does not take well to losing long time guys. I mean, ever try working with a 30 something year old guy who sulks around and has this angry Japanese I-KILL-YOU-IF-I-COULD look on his face? Damn near impossible and that is speaking from experience.

Even still though, the point I am trying to get at is I want to try and leave (if it comes down to that) on a good note. I was raised with the idea that it is not a good idea to "burn the bridge" when leaving a job and I'd like not to. But the more I think about it, the more it seems that that is just not possible.

In the end, I guess regardless of how my boss reacts and the situation of the company, I gotta watch out for my own ass here. A fact once told to me by my mom rings through my head right now about how, regardless of my stupid loyalty ideals, these guys don't pay my bills, don't ensure that I have a roof over my head and probably wouldn't piss on me if I were on fire. Or however that saying goes...

Damn it! I wish I could just come to a conclusion or a solution that I can live with. I know I can't please everyone here... but shit...

My head hurts, thank god I have a 3 day weekend to stew over this mess in my brain cells. ><

The Makings of a Very Busy July

Man, I am still pumped about what went down on Monday night (CM Punk winning the World title)! It was just so unexpected and that means something these days, let me tell you. I just never would have imagined that I'd see Punk win one of the major titles (ECW title doesn't really match up with the WWE and World titles, in my opinion at least) before guys like Jeff Hardy.

What is so interesting is the rumors that made the rounds before Wrestlemania earlier this year, was that Hardy was chosen to win the Money in the Bank ladder match. But then he was busted on Wellness violations and was suspended, which lasted a month or two after 'Mania.

Makes me wonder now, if Hardy hadn't gotten suspended in the first place, would he be the man holding up the World Heavyweight Championship TODAY? Hmmmm...

Anyway, like the title of this writing states, man July is gonna be a busy little bugger!

On the movie front, there are so many movies I'd like to see that are out right now, it just ain't funny. Topping the list is Get Smart, The Incredible Hulk and Wall-E. Yet this month brings about The Dark Knight (pictured, top), plus the new Hellboy movie as well. So many choices, where does a guy possibly even begin?

The gaming front (for me) doesn't look to let up in the least either. But the game that I am looking forward to the most (at this point) is Civilization Revolution. I've played through the demo more then just a few times and I am really digging it. Another prospect is Final Fantasy IV, which should be released towards the end of this month.

While I wait for this judgment day of movies and games, I rented and have actually been playing Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath. To sum up my feelings of it, I certainly like this version over the original C&C3 game. It just seems a whole hell of a lot easier to control this time around, which is a blessing because I ended up hating the original almost solely for that reason.

One thing though, about C&C... if you get hit by any of the super weapons and it's almost certainly game over.

Anyway, because of the changes made to C&C3: Kane's Wrath, I am more excited then ever about Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. Plus since I cannot play that on PC either, it getting released on XBox makes things a little better.

Last game I'll mention here is Fable 2, which is looking and sounding pretty damn promising in my opinion. But then, so did the first Fable and that sucker promised everything and the sun back in the day. Either way, I am sure I'll be giving that one a try sooner rather then later, once it is released that is.

CM Punk, NEW World Heavyweight Champion!

So after being on the losing end since Wrestlemania, then being drafted away from ECW to Raw, CM Punk finally cashes in his Money in the Bank briefcase and defeats Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship! On top of that, that means Monday Night Raw has a world champion again! Ah hell, I'll just let the damn video speak for itself! PUNK WINS! PUNK WINS!! PUNK WINS!!!
