I don't know what it is, but I really enjoy watching romance movies with happy endings to them. I don't mean the kind of movie that goes sappy from 3 seconds in and just gush for the entire film with corny lines and all that. I mean the kind of movie, the kind of story that actually has meaning to it. I think it might be that unrefined writer side of myself that comes out during these times, because I really think it is the story that draws me in.
Maybe I really am a hopeless romantic, because I surely hate movies where the main characters suddenly don't come together and it looks like the whole story crumbles. The usual thing seems to be the main woman character will end up with someone else, usually the guy she left to be with the main guy character, and the guy just goes all broken up about it.
Please forgive me if my explaination isn't so clear. Still though, if/when I do see a movie that is suppose to be a romance story, damn it they better be together by the time those credits roll or else.
I hate that.
If it comes down to where the ending makes less and less sense, I will leave the room (for rented movies anyway. Movies in the theater are too expensive to walk out on!) and not watch another second of it. The last movie I did that to was a recent movie I think with Kevin Costner.
All of that above was to set up about the movie I had just seen last night. The Lake House.
I think it easily ranks up there as a favorite, though I admit that I had gotten into a bit of a spat about it at first with my girlfriend as we went to find a movie to rent. I also admit that we both wanted to see it when it came out in theater, but for whatever reason we didn't.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. It ranks high on my list because the story, to me, just flows. With anything that might look like mindless side tracking comes out to being a piece of the puzzle, explaining and fleshing out the characters and their pasts. I am glad it came out this way, because I really dislike movies and TV series (Such as Korean Dramas, who tend to drag on and on rather then forward the overall story) that get side tracked with far too much things that really don't add much to the story.
Another aspect that I enjoyed and was amazed at how well it played out, was the fact that these two lovers were seperated by 2 years and connected by a simple mail box outside of the lake house. As the story progresses, everything slowly comes together and it all begins to make sense. It isn't to say that this movie isn't without its own tragidy.
Its also good to see Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock back together again. They were good in Speed and they are even better in this movie. In my opinion at least, I do think they work extremely well together and it really took me by surprise to see Keanu Reeves outside of the Matrix role and Sandra Bullock from her Miss Congeniality role. I half-expected to see them act as those characters, at least the mannerisms and what not.
I guess I would be guilty of stereotyping there.
But truthfully, their performance looked so natural and to me, neither of them looked out of place. I think that allows the audience a easier opportunity to connect to the characters. I know it sure as heck helped me take both characters seriously.
Ok, another thing I should admit here and now I suppose. I am leaving much of the story details out, in some off event that someone should come across this and hasn't seen this movie but wants to. Yeah, I wouldn't want to ruin it.
Overall, I'd have to say it was very worth getting and I do believe now that it was a better choice over Mission: Impossible 3. Now I also must say that another movie has been added onto my invisible "Must-Have" list, which means I will come up even shorter on cash. And I wonder why I tend to be so broke....
